Rate fundamentals

Exchange rate insights

A converter provides a useful estimate, but the final amount offered by a bank, card network, or payment provider can include additional pricing.

01

What is an exchange rate?

An exchange rate describes how much one currency is worth in terms of another. If one USD equals a stated number of INR, that figure is the rate used to estimate the value when moving between those currencies.

02

Mid-market rate

The mid-market rate is the midpoint between current buy and sell prices in the broader currency market. It is a useful reference, although consumer providers may not offer that exact rate.

03

Why exchange rates change

Rates can move as market participants respond to inflation, interest rates, economic data, trade, political events, liquidity, and expectations about future monetary policy.

04

Floating vs fixed currency

A floating currency is primarily priced through market supply and demand. A fixed or pegged currency is managed against another currency or basket, usually within rules set by a monetary authority.

05

Bank rate vs market rate

Banks and payment services may add a spread to their reference rate and charge transaction fees. Processing time and card-network rules can also make the completed transaction differ from a converter estimate.

Privacy & accuracy

Clear about the data behind your result

Rate retrieval and conversion calculation are separate: the page requests a table of rates, while the amount you type is used locally for the arithmetic.

Results are estimates, not executable quotes. Confirm important transfers, purchases, or accounting values with the relevant financial provider.

Live rate request

The page requests USD-based rates from the public API endpoint and displays the provider's update time when available.

Embedded fallback

If the live request fails, predefined reference rates keep the calculator functional, with a visible fallback status.

Browser calculations

Currency arithmetic runs in JavaScript in your browser after the rate data has been received or fallback rates are selected.

No unnecessary uploads

The API request obtains rate data; it does not need the amount you enter in order to calculate the displayed conversion.

Currency conversion FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Understand rate sources, fallback behavior, privacy, provider fees, and why a completed transaction can differ from an estimate.

The converter requests USD-based rate data from the public ExchangeRate-API open endpoint. If that request is unavailable, the calculator switches to embedded reference rates so that basic conversion remains available.

The update time shown in the converter comes from the rate provider when a live request succeeds. Provider rates are updated periodically and should not be treated as tick-by-tick trading prices.

The mid-market rate is the midpoint between the price buyers are offering and the price sellers are asking in the currency market. Banks and payment services may add a margin or fee to this reference rate.

No. The displayed result is a rate-based estimate and does not include bank spreads, card charges, transfer fees, taxes, or other provider-specific costs.

Yes. After the page has loaded, the calculator can use its embedded fallback rates when the live rate request fails. Fallback results are estimates and may not reflect current market conditions.

Fallback rates are intended to keep the calculator functional, not to provide a current quote. Always confirm a time-sensitive payment or transfer with your financial provider.

The amount and conversion arithmetic remain in your browser. The page requests exchange-rate data from the API provider, but it does not send the amount you enter as part of that rate request.

Banks, card networks, and transfer services may use their own rate, processing time, spread, and fee structure. Those differences can make the final charged amount higher or lower than this estimate.

Use the swap button between the From and To selectors. The converter will reverse the selected currencies and immediately recalculate the result.
