The browser decodes the selected AVIF into pixels, draws those pixels onto an HTML Canvas, and encodes a new JPEG file at your selected quality. This is a real decode-and-encode operation, not a renamed file extension or a copy of incompatible AVIF bytes.

Important output behavior

  • Transparent pixels are flattened because JPEG has no alpha channel.
  • Animated AVIF exports only its primary or first displayed frame.
  • Metadata, gain maps, depth data, and auxiliary images are not copied.
  • HDR and wide-gamut colors may be tone-mapped by the browser.
  • JPEG output is lossy, even when quality is set to 100.

Choose the alpha color deliberately

No. The browser decodes the visible pixels and creates a new JPEG. EXIF, GPS, XMP, ICC metadata, depth data, gain maps, auxiliary images, and other source metadata are not retained.

What happens to an animated AVIF?

Only the primary or first displayed frame is converted. JPEG is a still-image format, so animation and later frames are not included.

Why can AVIF and JPG colors look different?

HDR or wide-gamut AVIF content may be tone-mapped or color-converted by the browser and Canvas pipeline. JPEG output can therefore look different from the original in some viewers.
